It is not a beach holiday. Ghana does not really have those, and we will not pretend otherwise. This is a heritage route with sea air.
Most Ghana itineraries schedule Cape Coast Castle for a morning and a market for the afternoon.
Whoever wrote that has not stood in the dungeons.
This itinerary is paced around what the castles actually do to people. For diaspora travellers in particular, the male dungeon and the Door of No Return are not a stop on a tour. People weep. People need to sit down. People go quiet for the rest of the day and find they cannot eat.
That is a normal response, not an embarrassment, and it is the single most common reason a well-planned Ghana trip falls apart — not because anything went wrong, but because nobody built in room for it.
So: castle mornings are followed by empty afternoons. Deliberately. If you feel fine, you have gained a free afternoon in a good town. If you do not, you have exactly what you need.
Why October. The minor rains in the south are tapering. Expect short heavy showers rather than all-day rain — they pass in an hour. The advantages are real: the country is green, the castles are quiet, prices have not yet risen for December, and you will share the dungeons with a handful of people rather than a coach party. Along the western coast, Kundum may still be rolling town to town.
The sea is rough. Do not plan on swimming. Elmina town beach on a calm day is the one honest exception, and even that is a dip rather than a swim. There are no lifeguards anywhere on this coast.
Cash. Ghana runs on cash outside the cities. There are no ATMs along most of the coast. Draw in Accra and again in Cape Coast, and carry more than you expect to need.
